Who, what, when, where, and why was this book banned?
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was banned by The American Library Association, making its way to number one on the list of most challenged books from 1990-1999. As well as seventh most challenged from 2000-2009. The book was first challenged by the school board in Michigan, due to complaints from teachers at Liviona Elementary School. Children of all grades were becoming frightened by the stories, mainly the gruesome illustrations in the book. The teachers became concerned with the children reading the book, so they took matters into their own hands and complained to the principal who decided that the teachers were right about Schwartz' books.
